How is skilled migration usually assessed?

Many skilled-migration pathways assess a combination of age, education, work experience, language ability, occupation and individual circumstances. Some are points-based, some place greater weight on occupation or skills assessment, and others give importance to a job offer, local experience, or provincial/state support.
